What are AI art generators?

AI-powered art creation tools allow to easily generate unique digital artwork, without needing artistic skills. These artificial intelligence programs have been trained on vast datasets of images, teaching them artistic techniques similar to how human artists develop skills over years of practice. By entering a text description, keywords, or other prompts, the AI algorithm can produce original images tailored to the user's vision.

The generated artworks can then be turned into NFTs on blockchain networks and sold to grant full ownership rights to buyers. Leading art generator apps make the process seamless, handling the AI generation and only requiring basic inputs from the user.

Can AI-generated art be sold as NFTs?

Yes. Although the legality of selling AI art has been questioned as the technology has advanced, AI can be viewed as a creative tool. On this basis, the artist who uses the tool to create original work should own the art and have the right to sell it. If you are an artist who uses AI to generate unique NFT art, you can legally sell it, just as you could sell a physical painting. But obviously, you cannot legally resell or duplicate AI art created by someone else, as that would violate copyright.

Nevertheless, you must keep in mind that policies on the commercial use of artificial intelligence vary from platform to platform. While images created by AI can be sold, some generators prohibit commercial distribution of their products.
Let's take a look at the AI generators already mentioned and figure out the peculiarities of using AI images for commercial purposes.
You're free to utilize NightCafe's AI-generated art for commercial purposes, just ensure that you haven't incorporated any copyrighted images or those protected by copyright laws in your region during the creation.
When employing a free or trial Midjourney account, you're granted a Commons Noncommercial 4.0 Attribution International License. This implies that you can utilize the images, but refrain from selling or monetizing them, while also providing credit ("attribution") to Midjourney. As a paid member, you have full ownership of the assets you create, allowing for commercial use.
Commercial use of the generated images by Deep dream is allowed only if they were created while the user held an active paid monthly subscription plan.
You gain complete ownership of the images produced by StarryAI, giving you the freedom to use them for both personal and commercial purposes.
As per WOMBO official website, users retain ownership of all artworks created with the assistance of the service, including associated copyrights and other applicable intellectual property rights.
Step-by-step guide on how to use an AI art generator

To get started, go to https://creator.nightcafe.studio/ and create an account or log in if you already have one. Then, click "Create" in the top right corner of the screen or at the bottom of the page to start a new art generation project.
Here is a step-by-step guide on how to create AI artwork using NightCafe art generator as an example
Before we start the creation process, I would explain briefly the art generator credit system. Credits are required to use NightCafe to generate images. Each image generation costs a certain number of credits. You start with some free credits when you create an account. After those are used up, you have to purchase credit packs to continue generating images.
In NightCafe Studio, select the model based on which you want to create the image. In this tutorial, I’ll choose SDXL 1.0.

Text a prompt describing what you want the AI to generate. As an example, I used the promt generated from ChatGPT (see previous section):
Transform classical Greek mythology into a garden of Impressionist delights. Take a famous scene like the birth of Aphrodite from the sea and infuse it with the lush colors and soft brushstrokes characteristic of Monet. The sea foam and waves become a symphony of blooming flowers, with the goddess emerging amidst a riot of color and light.
Now you need to select the style along with the number of generated images. You can also customize image parameters like the aspect ratio and runtime. Longer runtimes usually produce higher quality images but take more time.

Click "Create" to have the AI generate images based on your prompt.
Once generated, you can select the best image or let the AI vary the output to get new results.
Tweak the settings if needed to get your desired output. You can also turn on Advanced mode and customize the settings. The advanced prompt editor allows to add some modifiers including colors, art movements, artists and so on.
Some models support a new prompt weight syntax that allows you to give more (or less) emphasis to individual words or phrases. To give more weight to a particular word or phrase, wrap it in parenthesis and add :{weight} inside the closing bracket. E.g.
Transform classical Greek mythology into a garden of Impressionist delights. Take a famous scene like (the birth of Aphrodite from the 1.5)

Using the mode, you can also add a start image, providing visual inspiration/direction for the AI. The overall prompt and refiner weight settings in NightCafe allow you to control how much influence the main prompt vs the refinement prompts have over the generated image.

Download the final image once you're fully satisfied.
This is the final image that I got (and the intermediate images that I customized with settings).

Having completed each step, you should now possess artworks prepared for NFT minting. To learn the minting process, you'll need to explore additional tutorials available.

You can now use the AI generated art for your personal or commercial projects!
